FAQs – Your Counselling Questions Answered

How long is each counselling session?
Sessions last approximately 50 minutes (often called a “therapeutic hour”). This applies to both adult and standard child sessions. For younger children, sometimes shorter 30-minute sessions are used if needed, but we’ll decide that based on the child’s engagement. Sessions start on the hour (or half hour) and we finish promptly to respect everyone’s time.

What happens in a counselling session – do I just talk?
In a typical session, you set the agenda by talking about whatever is on your mind. My role is to listen carefully, ask questions, and help you reflect. Sometimes I might gently challenge unhelpful thoughts or suggest an exercise. For example, we might practice a breathing technique if anxiety is a focus, or discuss a recent event that upset you to understand it better. With children, sessions may involve activities like drawing or games to help them express themselves. There’s no one “right” way to do counselling – we’ll do what works for you. And you’re never forced to talk about something you’re not ready to.

How much does it cost?
We offer a variety of options to fit your needs and budget. Please visit our Prices Page for more information.

How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies from person to person. Some clients feel relief in just a few sessions, especially if the issue is specific or recent. Others with more deep-rooted or complex issues (like long-term anxiety or personality-related difficulties) may benefit from a longer-term arrangement (several months or more). During our initial meetings, we can discuss a rough plan. Ultimately, you are in control – you can decide to continue or stop at any time. I usually suggest trying about 6 sessions to start with (if you’re open to it) and then reviewing how things are going.

What is a counselling contract and will I need to sign one?
Yes, a counselling contract is simply a written agreement that outlines the practical terms of therapy – things like session length, fees, confidentiality, cancellation policy (all the things we’ve largely covered on this site). It ensures we both have a clear understanding of our commitment. In our first session, I will go over it with you personally and give you a copy (and for parents of under-18s, you’d get a copy too). It’s not a scary legal document, but rather a mutual agreement for trust and clarity. You’ll sign it (or your parent/guardian will for a minor) just to acknowledge you understand the terms. If you’d like to see this in advance, you can download a sample Counselling Contract (PDF) from here on the site (or I can email it to you). It covers things like confidentiality and cancellation in detail.

Do i need to give consent before starting therapy?
Yes. i will always ask for your signed consent before we begin sessions. this is especially important when working with children or in school/care settings. Your understanding and agreement are essential before we start.

Are therapy sessions confidential?
Yes, sessions are confidential. However, there are a few exceptions: If I believe there is a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, or if there are legal safeguarding duties, I may need to share information. Wherever possible, I will always try to speak with you first before doing so

How is my personal data used and protected?
I follow GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) rules. I only collect the information needed to support your therapy, store it securely, and never share it without your consent unless required by law. You can ask to see or request deletion of your data at any time.
